Packers GM Brian Gutekunst says he never promised to trade Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said plenty during Wednesday's media availability. He insisted there are "no deadlines" for quarterback Aaron Rodgers to make a final decision on his future beyond the 2021 season, suggested that the Packers could allow All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams to test free agency, and added that it is "very doubtful" he'd "take very many" trade calls about 2020 draft selection Jordan Love.

As Rob Demovsky explained for ESPN, Gutekunst held "a separate session Wednesday with writers who cover the team" and refuted a story from last spring that claimed he was open to trading Rodgers.

"That was not something I told him," Gutekunst said about that situation. "Again, I think the whole conversation with Aaron last season before he came back was that, regardless, at the end of this past season, that we would sit down as a group and we would work it out one way or another."

Rodgers famously remained away from the Packers for much of last summer in a presumed attempt to force Gutekunst's hand, but the 38-year-old ultimately returned to work and went on to win the fourth NFL Most Valuable Player Award of his Hall of Fame career.

After last month's playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Rodgers said he and Gutekunst were "in a really good place," and a report from last week seemed to back the signal-caller's words. One can only guess if Gutekunst's latest comments will change things as everyone involved waits for Rodgers to announce his intentions for later this year.
