Packers GM Brian Gutekunst: 'Very doubtful' he'll take trade calls about QB Jordan Love

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst still doesn't know if quarterback Aaron Rodgers plans to play for the organization in 2022, attempt to force a trade to a different would-be contender or potentially retire after winning his fourth career NFL Most Valuable Player award.

Gutekunst told reporters Wednesday there are "no deadlines" for Rodgers to announce his decision but added "the earlier the better" for all involved. Somewhat lost in the shuffle is that the Packers have a different signal-caller to think about as winter turns to spring.

For better or for worse, Green Bay spent a first-round draft pick on prospect Jordan Love two years ago, but Love isn't much closer to entering the starting lineup today than he was during the fall of 2020 as long as Rodgers remains associated with the Packers moving forward. Understandably, Gutekunst was asked Wednesday about the possibility of shopping Love to any quarterback-needy teams ahead of the upcoming draft.

"I would be very doubtful that I’d take very many of those calls," Gutekunst explained, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Love started against the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 7 when Rodgers was famously absent due to testing positive for COVID-19 and completed 19-of-34 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 13-7 defeat. In total, the 23-year-old appeared in six regular-season contests this past campaign.

"Obviously, I’m sure there are some things he would have liked to go different in the games that he played, but I thought there were some really positive signs throughout the year, especially in the spring," Gutekunst said of Love.

It's unclear if Gutekunst and the coaching staff will trust Love with the keys to the team's offense if Rodgers departs this spring.
