Packers release FB/TE John Lovett

The Green Bay Packers have confirmed that they've released fullback and tight end John Lovett.

The 24-year-old recorded his only three rushes of the season in a 34-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 5 but went down to what was ultimately diagnosed as a torn ACL. In total, he appeared in eight games with Green Bay.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Lovett was set to make $780,000 for the 2021 season.

Friday's development is the latest bit of bad luck to strike Lovett over the past couple of years. He was with the Kansas City Chiefs in August 2019 but, as Charles Goldman noted for Chiefs Wire, was placed on season-ending injured reserve before Week 1 of that campaign.

Lovett was second on the Packers in special-teams tackles before his latest injury.

"He's definitely a spark plug for us and has developed into a good leader and plays hard, extremely hard, in every phase and has the right mentality that we're looking for on special teams," Green Bay special-teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga said last November.

Per Zach Kruse of Packers Wire, Lovett spent time as a quarterback during his college days with the Princeton Tigers and was well-liked among Green Bay coaches for his willingness to accept multiple roles.
