Packers, WR Sammy Watkins agree to one-year, $4M contract

Sammy Watkins' visit with the Green Bay Packers on Thursday apparently went well, as the former No. 4 overall pick has reportedly agreed to a one-year deal to become a new aerial weapon for MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Though the Packers will be Watkins' fifth different NFL team and 2022 will be his ninth season in the league, the Clemson product is still on the "right side of 30" (he'll turn 29 in June). The wideout will be asked to help fill the void left by the departures of All-Pro Davante Adams and speedster Marquez Valdes-Scantling, but is "likely just the first of several moves" that Green Bay will make to address the wide receivers room.

As a rookie with the Buffalo Bills in 2014, Watkins started and played in all 16 games for the only time thus far in his career, notching what are still career highs in targets (128) and receptions (65), while recording 982 receiving yards and six receiving scores as well. Despite being limited to 13 contests in 2015, Watkins still put up 60 catches on 96 targets and career-best numbers in receiving yards (1,047) and receiving touchdowns (nine).

Over 99 career regular-season contests split between the Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, the Fort Myers, Fla., native has made 348 catches for 5,059 receiving yards and 34 touchdowns. During his one season spent with former MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, Watkins posted career lows in targets (49), receptions (27), receiving yards (394) and receiving touchdowns (one).
