When the Carolina Panthers traded for wide receiver Diontae Johnson, it shocked the former Pro Bowler.

He didn't expect to be traded, despite his down year during the 2023 season.

However, when talking with reporters Tuesday , Johnson made a hilarious admission that he didn't know new head coach Dave Canales was coaching the Panthers when he arrived in Charlotte.

"At first I didn't know he was the head coach when I went out to dinner with him," Johnson said. "There is this energy he brings. Then after the dinner, someone told me he was the head coach. I was so surprised. But other than that, I love his energy. I am excited to play for him."

Good thing Canales has an impressive resume to bolster Johnson's belief in him. The 42-year-old was a member of the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff since 2010 before becoming offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2023 season.

During his time at Tampa Bay, Canales resuscitated the career of former top draft selection Baker Mayfield. The Panthers hope he does the same with second-year quarterback Bryce Young

Johnson will play a big part in that as well.

If Young, Canales and Johnson stay on the same page moving forward, the Panthers' offense will be much better than the 2-15 2023 season lows.
