Panthers rookie quarterback named team captain

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was selected to be a team captain for the 2023 season, the team announced in a Wednesday release.

Young would join linebacker Shaq Thompson, right tackle Taylor Moton, linebacker Brian Burns, wide receiver Adam Thielen and punter Johnny Hekker. Thompson, Moton and Burns were captains on Carolina's 2022 roster. Thompson is a team captain for the fourth season, according to the release.

"It’s a real honor," Young said, via Panthers Wire Managing Editor Anthony Rizzuti. "It’s something I definitely don’t take lightly. It means a lot to me to be a captain. And I’m super grateful for my teammates for just accepting me and allowing me to come in. This has been a great experience for me. It’s a great locker room, a great coaching staff. And, again, everyone just accepting me and allowing me to grow and us to be able to progress as a team.

"So really, again, it’s something that I really take a lot of pride in. It’s a huge honor for me and, obviously, there’s responsibility that comes with that as well. So, I’m excited for that challenge and I don’t take that lightly."

Young's captain selection more than highlights the leadership skills the 22-year-old quarterback possesses.

Young's leadership made him an ideal selection for the Panthers with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-10 quarterback had a promising end to his run in the NFL preseason. He recorded 73 passing yards and one touchdown as he completed seven of his 12 pass attempts in a 26-17 preseason win by the Detroit Lions.

Young must continue to prove he can be a leader for Carolina after being selected as a captain. If he can, he may be a reliable option under center for the Panthers as they look to find their footing with head coach Frank Reich.
