Patrick Mahomes passes Drew Brees for most single-season offensive yards in NFL history
Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes now owns the NFL record for most total yards (passing, rushing, and receiving) in a single season.
Mahomes set the mark before halftime of Saturday's Week 18 contest against the Las Vegas Raiders. He passes the previous record holder, future Hall of Famer Drew Brees, who posted a 5,562-yard season in 2011 with the New Orleans Saints.
Mahomes went 14-of-17 for 175 yards and a touchdown, adding two carries for 16 yards, helping the Chiefs jump out to a 24-3 lead over the Raiders at the break.
The Chiefs' dynamic QB entered the game only 430 passing yards behind Hall of Famer Peyton Manning (5,477) for the NFL single-season record. According to ESPN Stats and Info, Mahomes entered Saturday with five-career games throwing for more than 430 yards, so toppling Manning was doable. However, Mahomes would have to have a monster second half to do it now, needing 255 more yards to set the record.
In last week's victory over the Denver Broncos, Mahomes joined Brees and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady as the only players in NFL history to pass for 5,000 yards in multiple seasons.
Amid a record-setting season, it's no surprise Mahomes is one of the favorites to win this year's MVP award. Per Oddschecker, sportsbooks have Mahomes listed with the best odds of earning the nod.
