Patriots continue losing players ahead of 2020 season

Since losing Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March, the New England Patriots continue losing.

Patriots fullback James Develin announced his retirement on Instagram Monday, and he now joins a growing list of former New Englanders who are no longer with the organization. Let's take a look at who has left the organization thus far and under what circumstances.

Free Agency

  • Brady: Two-year, $50 million deal with Bucs.
  • Kyle Van Noy: Four-year, $51 million deal with Dolphins.
  • Jamie Collins: Three-year, $30 million deal with Lions.
  • Danny Shelton: Two-year, $8 million deal with Lions.
  • Phillip Dorsett: One-year, $1 million deal with Seahawks.
  • Elandon Roberts: One-year, $2 million deal with Dolphins.
  • Nate Ebner: One-year, $2 million deal with Giants.

Traded

  • Rob Gronkowski: Traded to Bucs for a fourth-round draft pick.
  • Duron Harmon: Traded to Lions for a fifth-round draft pick.

Cut

  • Stephen Gostkowski: Cut by Patriots after an injury derailed his 2019-20 season.

Retired

  • James Develin

If you're keeping track, that's now 11 players that have departed the organization over the offseason. And there's still a possibility that more leave, including Joe Thuney.

While the Patriots didn't select a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, it seems Bill Belichick is pretty content with rolling with second-year quarterback Jarret Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer as his quarterbacks for the upcoming season.

New England has dominated the AFC East for the last two decades, but the tides are set to change this coming season with the Buffalo Bills holding the best odds to win the division.

Although the departures don't help, the Patriots have been long overdue for some sort of overhaul.
