The New England Patriots’ search to find a leader for their front office ended exactly where it was expected, with Eliot Wolf. The official title for Wolf is the Executive Vice President of Player Personnel. Although he did not receive a more traditional job title such as general manager or head of football operations, the responsibilities appear to be the same.
Eliot Wolf landing the job comes as no surprise. Many, including this scribe, have been critical of New England’s approach to the hire (not the hire itself). It resulted in multiple minority candidates turning down interviews for a job they knew they weren’t going to get, Once The Patriots complied with The Rooney Rule, they were able to name Eliot Wolf to the post.
New England Patriots CEO Robert Kraft seemed to address these criticisms in the team’s press release.
“As I have stated multiple times during the offseason, the plan was to observe the working relationship and involvement between Eliot and Jerod and see how they managed our offseason personnel decisions,” said Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft. “Then, following the draft we would formally undertake a process for setting up the permanent structure of our personnel department. I have been impressed with Eliot’s management style and experience and I’m excited that he has agreed to take on this new position.”

It is unclear what the plan would have been if Kraft had not been impressed with Wolf’s handling of hiring a coaching staff, signing free agents, and deciding what to do with the team’s highest draft pick in 31 years. Fortunately for Eliot Wolf and the New England Patriots, that is apparently no longer an issue.
