Patriots QB Cam Newton posts cryptic Instagram message: 'Loyalty, I deserve it'

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton took to Instagram on Friday with a rather cryptic message.

Newton posted several photos of himself with the caption: "ím FÂR FRØM ₽£RF£ČT.... büt ŁØ¥ÂŁT¥, í D£§£RV£ ĮT⚠️"

It's unclear what Newton is referring to, but some might believe he's referring to his current competition with rookie Mac Jones for New England's starting quarterback position. Maybe he wants loyalty from Bill Belichick and the team after being the Pats starter in 2020 and putting in the work to return in 2021.

However, after Thursday's preseason win over the Washington Football Team, Newton made it clear that he and Jones would continue to be there for one another. The former MVP also said that Jones asked him for advice before taking the field against Washington.

Jones got a standing ovation from the Gillette Stadium crowd Thursday night, too, which is something Newton hasn't received since he arrived in Foxboro last season.

To be fair, Newton didn't have a great 2020 season, and he looked a little uneasy during Thursday's preseason opener. Jones, meanwhile, put on a show, completing 13-of-19 passes for 87 yards. He seemed very comfortable in the pocket and gave Patriots fans something to get excited about.

Belichick has reiterated throughout training camp that Newton will be his starter this year, but after Jones' performance on Thursday, the competition could be heating up, and the Patriots head coach might have to consider giving the Alabama product a chance in the near future.
