Mac Jones asked Cam Newton for advice before preseason debut with Patriots

The New England Patriots won their preseason opener 22-13 over the Washington Football Team, and rookie quarterback Mac Jones had an impressive showing.

The rookie quarterback might be able to thank Cam Newton for some of his success Thursday night, as he sought out the former MVP for advice before taking the field.

"He came and talked to me, and we talked it out about just his expectation. Every young quarterback goes through it -- the excitement, the anticipation," Newton said, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. "He wants to be so perfect, and I see his preparation is always pristine. That's what I admire about him."

Jones completed 13-of-19 passes for 87 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He was undoubtedly New England's best quarterback on Thursday night, with Newton and Brian Hoyer also seeing time.

The Patriots scored two field goals while Jones was at quarterback. He could have easily had a touchdown, though, with his best throw of the night coming on a deep 34-yard incompletion to Kristian Wilkerson. The wide receiver failed to reel in the catch down the sideline.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick acknowledged that Jones did "some good things" on Thursday night but also said there were things he could improve on, which he said is "true for everybody."

New England selected Jones 15th overall out of Alabama in this summer's NFL draft. He was the fifth quarterback taken behind Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance and Justin Fields.

The Patriots are now preparing to face the Philadelphia Eagles in their second preseason game next Thursday. Jones will likely see plenty of playing time again at Lincoln Financial Field.
