Patriots were interested Stefon Diggs before trade to Bills?

For all the talk around the Patriots not giving Tom Brady enough weapons the past couple years, it sure sounds like New England was trying to make a move for a big-play wide receiver.

The New England Patriots reportedly had interest in acquiring former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs before he was traded to their AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.

However, Breer noted New England's interest cooled when it placed the franchise tag on guard Joe Thuney. With dwindling cap space and the Pats' six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback off to a new team, it didn't make sense to continue pursuit of Diggs.

Diggs could've been a nice addition to New England's receiving group with two consecutive seasons of 1,000-plus yards and at least six touchdowns.

The Patriots' receiving corps is made up of Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, N'Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, Quincy Adeboyejo and Devin Ross. With the addition of Byrd over the past week, it's hard to believe New England will make any other additions at wideout.

If Bill Belichick and the Patriots managed to land Diggs, would Brady have been interested in staying with New England? It's a thought, but we'll probably never know if that actually would have kept him from moving on.
