QB Alex Smith has 'no animosity' toward Washington Football Team

Washington Football Team quarterback and NFL Comeback Player of the Year Alex Smith raised eyes throughout the football community when he recently told GQ's Clay Skipper that his return from a career-threatening leg injury "threw a wrench in the team's plan."

JP Finlay of D.C. radio station 106.7 The Fan has since offered additional information regarding Smith's interview.

"One thing they want to make clear is that Alex was talking to a reporter that didn’t know anything about football, and if you go back, the first story that came out had to be edited because Alex said ‘IR’ and the reporter thought that meant ‘high arm,'" Finlay said while citing a source, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "This is not a dude that knows football. And that’s not a shot. I don’t know lifestyle; I couldn’t go write a fashion piece. I could write about football because that’s my lane. . . . The message from the source I talked to close to Alex is that, listen, there’s no animosity towards the organization. None of those comments were meant to make anybody mad. He was simply telling the story of what happened."

Smith is signed through the 2022 campaign, but Washington could save nearly $15 million in salary-cap space by cutting the 36-year-old during the offseason. Taylor Heinicke, who started at quarterback for Washington in the playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has said he hopes Smith stays with the team through the spring and summer months.
