Taylor Heinicke hopes Alex Smith stays with Washington for 2021 season

Alex Smith's future with the Washington Football Team is uncertain.

However, one of his fellow quarterbacks hopes the veteran will continue to be a part of the team's future in 2021. In an interview with NFL Network, Taylor Heinicke lauded Smith for his play and off-field contributions.

"He means a lot to the team," Heinicke said, according to Grant Gordon of NFL.com. "He brings a lot to the table. Hopefully we can bring him back. I know a lot of the guys love him and he's good for the locker room and he can still play. But football's a crazy business. So who knows what's going to happen."

Washington signed Heinicke to a two-year deal earlier this month. He'll likely compete for the starting job in 2021 after going toe-to-toe with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs.

With Kyle Allen also expected to return from injury, it's unclear how Smith will fit into the team's plans.

The 36-year-old is set to make $18.75 million in 2021, but it's also unclear if Washington is willing to take on his $24.4 million cap hit.
