QB Jared Goff on verge of breaking record, helping Lions emerge as NFC North favorite

Believe it or not, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff could etch his name into the NFL record book this season.

Since Week 9 of last season, the 29-year-old has thrown 359 consecutive passes without an interception, the third-most in league history. Aaron Rodgers holds the record with 402 consecutive passes, and future Hall of Famer Tom Brady is second with 399.

Nonetheless, the QB couldn't care less about the record.

"I haven't thought about it once," Goff said in a Tuesday news conference. "It's cool, yeah, it's a cool thing, and [I'll] look back on it one day, but if you told me it kept going and we'd lost games, I don't care. I'm just trying to win games."

Yet the QB should take more pride in his accomplishment because it helped the Lions emerge as a viable NFC threat. Since the streak started, Detroit is 8-2. It upset the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1. And Goff has thrown 16 TDs, completed 66.6 percent of his passes and posted an above-average 104.7 passer rating.

"We talk about winning, and again, it's become a byproduct of taking care of the ball, and typically it always is," Goff said.

While the former No. 1 overall pick isn't the most electric QB in the league, that doesn't matter since his steady, efficient play reinvigorated his career. Also, it's one reason the Lions have a solid chance to make the playoffs this season and win their first division title since 1991. Per OddsChecker, they hold the best odds (-110) to win the NFC North.

Over the past 10 games, he's averaged 34.7 passing attempts, meaning he could set a new mark early this season. He only needs 44 more passes to break the record.
