Radio host defends controversial comments on Jets' Zach Wilson

New York sports radio personality Shaun Morash generated headlines earlier this week when he blasted New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson for returning home to Utah to spend time with his girlfriend and family during the team's bye. 

Morash stood by his take during Friday's edition of the WFAN "Evan and Tiki" program. 

"I don’t feel bad," Morash defiantly declared, according to Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "This isn’t 'A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.' Great, he was throwing the ball around with his brother. How about do that for two days, get your a-- back on a plane and get to Jersey, pick up the phone and say, '(Jets wide receiver) Allen Lazard, where you at? Let’s go to a high school and throw.' I don’t know what families you guys are from, but families are the ultimate distractions." 

Wilson was supposed to spend this season sitting behind future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, but the Jets had to scrap that plan after Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles early into the regular-season opener. While Wilson failed to impress across his first two starts following Rodgers' injury, the third-year pro ultimately responded by helping the Jets earn back-to-back wins that improved the team to 3-3 ahead of the Week 7 bye. 

Morash mentioned how retired living legend Tom Brady once "admitted during the bye week that he went back and watched every single game they played that year three times." In November 2018, John Breech of CBS Sports noted how Brady explained he watched the 10 New England Patriots games from that season "a couple of times" during New England's bye. 

Morash may have a point in that the numbers suggest Wilson could've used additional work at the Jets' facility during the break. According to ESPN stats, the 24-year-old heads into this Sunday's game against the 2-5 New York Giants ranked 29th among eligible players with a 37.1 adjusted QBR and 30th with a 73.4 passer rating. Wilson tossed five interceptions and four touchdown passes over the Jets' first six games but failed to find the end zone once across the past two contests. 

One wonders if Wilson will regret his bye-week decisions if he produces a dud against the Giants at MetLife Stadium.
