New York radio host blasts Jets QB Zach Wilson for bye-week vacation

New York Jets QB Zach Wilson's relaxing weekend with loved ones drew the ire of some in the sports media industry.

With the Jets on a bye in Week 7, Wilson returned home to Utah for fall festivities with his family and girlfriend. According to WFAN host Shaun Morash, the vacation couldn't have come at a worse time.

"Zach Wilson, in what is about to be the biggest stretch of his career, decided it was a good time to take his girlfriend to Utah to apple and pumpkin pick and go to haunted houses," Morash said Wednesday on "Evan and Tiki." "The Jets stink after byes — Zach Wilson's season last year derailed after a bye."

The Jets are 3-3, a strong start considering they lost starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers minutes into the season and have played a gauntlet of Super Bowl-contending teams. With winnable games against the Giants, Chargers and Raiders on tap, New York will look to stack victories and avoid an all-too-familiar collapse.

Following their Week 10 bye last season, the Jets finished the season 1-7 after a promising 6-3 start. In a Week 11 matchup against the New England Patriots, Wilson turned in the worst performance of his career, completing 9-of-22 passes for 77 yards in a 10-3 loss. The Jets quarterback lacked accountability during a news conference following the defeat and was benched shortly after.

Though Wilson has made great strides since hitting rock bottom last season at New England, Morash argued the 24-year-old still hasn't earned the vacation he took.

"I believe 52 guys could have gone and visited families. The quarterback, the leader, needs to be at or around that facility all week last week," Morash said. "Zach Wilson has not done enough to get his ass on a plane with his girlfriend and go to Utah for a week."

Media members on "X," formerly known as Twitter, were quick to clap back at Morash for his hot take.

Few NFL players have had a more tumultuous season than Wilson. The third-year QB was thrust into the starting quarterback role following Rodgers' season-ending injury, only to be criticized by fans, media and players for his poor play in ensuing weeks. Yet Wilson persevered, lately playing smart football as a game manager and keeping the Jets in the playoff hunt.

After a whirlwind of activity such as this, a short break from football is certainly warranted.
