Raiders add former All-Pro cornerback, elite ball hawk to secondary

After months of rumors linking the two sides, free-agent cornerback Marcus Peters and the Las Vegas Raiders agreed to a one-year contract on Monday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Peters, 30, has a stacked resume, including NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2015, three Pro Bowl berths and two first-team All-Pro selections. Peters' 32 interceptions since entering the league are the most in the NFL.

Yet despite his statistical dominance, it's unclear if the Raiders are getting the dominant cornerback that Peters has been for much of his career. After missing the entirety of the 2021 season with a torn ACL, Peters wasn't the same playmaker in 2022, collecting a career-low one interception over 13 games. Furthermore, he's posted an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 67.7 or lower over his past two seasons (2022, 2020) after earning a career-best 83.2 mark in 2019.

While Peters may never regain his All-Pro form from a few seasons back, he's a bargain, high-reward signing for a Raiders team desperate to shore up their secondary. Las Vegas allowed 242.9 yards per game through the air in 2022, the fourth-most in the NFL. Their six interceptions as a team were tied with the New York Giants for the lowest total in football.

Peters should immediately challenge the likes of David Long Jr., Duke Shelley and rookie fourth-round pick Jakorian Bennett as the Raiders No. 1 cornerback on the boundary. Nate Hobb, the secondary's most proven holdover from a season ago, is penciled in as the team's starting nickelback.
