Rams GM Les Snead doesn't commit future to QB Jared Goff

Those running the Los Angeles Rams don't sound sold on committing to Jared Goff as their starting quarterback for the 2021 season.

"Jared Goff is a Ram at this moment," Rams general manager Les Snead told reporters on Tuesday, per Lindsey Thiry of ESPN. "It's way too early to speculate the future. That's a beautiful mystery."

Snead's comments followed NFL Network's Steve Wyche reporting earlier this month that the relationship between Goff and Rams head coach Sean McVay needs "marriage counseling" moving forward. Goff tossed 16 interceptions in 2019 and threw 13 more this past season, and the 26-year-old finished the 2020 campaign 23rd overall with a 90.0 passer rating and a 58.5 total QBR, according to ESPN stats.

As Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted in late December, the Rams would suffer a salary-cap charge of $22.2 million upon trading Goff this offseason. While the Rams seem destined to be attached to Goff's contract through the 2022 season, that doesn't mean McVay must start the quarterback every game the next two years.

"Moving on from Jared Goff, that's ... the money we've invested in him, that's not easy to overcome," Snead added.

The Rams are expected to sign a veteran quarterback to push Goff in training camp. As ESPN's NFL Nation explained last week, Ryan Fitzpatrick could be available for a club searching for a bridge option at the position.
