Relationship between Rams' Jared Goff, Sean McVay 'not great'?

Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback Jared Goff did his best to play through an injury to the thumb on his throwing hand but couldn't guide his team past the Green Bay Packers in Saturday's playoff contest. 

As noted by Nick Shook of the league's official website, NFL Network's Steve Wyche reported on Monday that Rams head coach Sean McVay isn't completely convinced a healthy Goff is the Rams' long-term answer at the position. 

"We know John Wolford came in, and they were excited about him when Jared Goff got hurt and the way he performed, and then he got hurt," Wyche explained. "So I think a lot of people are wondering if they're going to bring in a veteran type of quarterback to push Jared Goff this offseason. Or at least have that threat there as a backup to see if they can elevate Goff.

"The people I've spoken to said basically at this moment the relationship with Goff and McVay: not great. They need marriage counseling is what one person said to me. I think this is something that they're going to be able to work through, but there's got to be some healing and that's not just with Jared Goff's injured thumb."

Wolford, a former Alliance of American Football quarterback, started in place of the injured Goff in Week 17 but went down to a neck injury in the wild-card win over the Seattle Seahawks on Jan. 9. McVay told reporters that he currently isn't against the idea of holding a competition between Goff, Wolford and a different veteran who could potentially push Goff during training camp. 

"I'd say, I think as you grow, as you continue to learn; that's just where we're at," McVay said. "I'm not saying anything other than we're evaluating that right now. I think it's important that you do that at every single spot, and no position is excluded from that conversation." 

According to ESPN stats, Goff finished the regular season 23rd overall with a 90.0 passer rating and a 58.5 total QBR. It's understandable McVay might think the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft isn't playing to the level of his massive contract that will make him difficult to trade before the 2022 campaign ends.
