Rams Release Veteran Offensive Lineman Brian Allen

The Los Angeles Rams announced that they have parted ways with veteran center Brian Allen. The move will clear $4.9 million in salary cap room while leaving $3.15 million in dead money.

The Rams drafted Allen in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, 111th overall. He appeared in 13 games as a rookie before earning the starting center job in his second season. That season was cut short after just nine games because of injury and he would ultimately miss the entire 2020 season due to injury as well.

He would return in 2021 where he had his best season of his career. Allen would start 16 of 17 games and all four playoff games during the Rams’ run to winning the Super Bowl. He was also named a Pro Bowl alternate that season.

Prior to the 2022 season, Allen signed a three-year extension with the Rams worth $24 million. Unfortunately, injuries would again hamper his season as he appeared in just five games due to knee and thumb injuries. This past season he lost out in a competition for the starting center job to Coleman Shelton and appeared in just five games with no starts.

Allen was undoubtedly an extremely important part of the Rams run to Super Bowl LVI, but unfortunately injuries have continually hampered his ability to contribute to the team consistently. Having already replaced him with Shelton and with the money owed to him next season, it was a difficult, but understandable decision by the Rams to part ways at this point. And by releasing him now, Allen can get a head start on finding a new team before free agency starts.

Rams announce seven new additions to Sean McVay’s coaching staff

The Rams will have a lot of new faces on the sidelines next season and the team announced seven new additions that will be joining head coach Sean McVay’s staff. This includes Giff Smith as the defensive line coach and run game coordinator, John Streicher as game management coordinator, Dave Ragone as quarterbacks coach, Chili Davis as an assistant special teams coach, Greg Williams as inside linebackers coach, Rob Calabrese as an offensive assistant and Nate Scheelhaase as an offensive assistant and pass game specialist.

The Rams also announced the promotion of Chris Shula to defensive coordinator after Raheem Morris was hired as the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Of course Morris’ hiring also forced many of these additions as there were multiple coaches who went with Morris to Atlanta.

But this is nothing new to McVay, who has lost coaches and coordinators throughout the years since becoming head coach of the Rams and he will continue to bring in the right additions to continue to move this franchise forward.
