Report: Bears HC Matt Nagy to be fired after Thanksgiving game at Lions

The Chicago Bears have dropped five straight games to fall to 3-7 on a once-promising NFL season and will be without rookie quarterback Justin Fields for the Thanksgiving afternoon matchup at the winless Detroit Lions because of a rib injury.

It appears the Bears are set to make a change even before the winter months.

Mark Konkol reports for Patch that "a top source with knowledge of the decision" says the Bears will part ways with head coach Matt Nagy following Thursday's contest. Konkol adds that Nagy was informed of this call Monday coming off Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

While the Bears have never fired a coach during a season in their history, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk notes Konkol is a Pulitzer Prize winner who previously worked for the Chicago Sun-Times and, thus, could believably have an inside source within the organization.

Nagy's popularity has waned throughout the fall to the point that unhappy fans have begun asking for his dismissal during Chicago Bulls games:

Bears special teams coordinator Chris Tabor handled head-coaching duties earlier this season when Nagy was sidelined with COVID-19 and told reporters Tuesday he has no knowledge of any such decision.

"I don’t know anything about that report," Tabor told reporters, per Michael David Smith of PFT. "Reports are just reports to me. I have a job to do and I’m going to stick to that job."

For what it's worth, Nagy has also denied the story:

Somewhat ironically, the Lions fired previous head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn following a blowout loss on Thanksgiving nearly one year ago.

Could history repeat itself this Friday?
