Report: Broncos plan to move on from two-time Super Bowl champion

The Denver Broncos are scrapping their roster after an awful 1-4 start.
Per Field Yates of ESPN, Denver plans to move on from linebacker Frank Clark, whether it's via trade or release. The linebacker agreed to give back $1.686M in guaranteed salary, clearing room for a potential move.

It's not a surprise because multiple reports signaled the Broncos could trade several players before the deadline on Oct. 31. Also, they recently dealt defensive end Randy Gregory and a 2024 seventh-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 sixth-rounder.

"Since we're talking trade deadline, it feels pretty obvious from talking to teams around the league that the 1-4 Broncos are open for business," wrote ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano. "But the Broncos in Sean Payton's first season don't look very good and could use some more picks to kick-start a rebuild."

Moving on from Clark makes sense. A hip injury has hampered the former Pro Bowler, causing him to miss three games, and he's only logged two tackles and no sacks.

Still, the 30-year-old might attract a decent trade market thanks to his resumé. He won two Super Bowls in four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and is clutch in the postseason. He's third all-time in playoff sacks with 13.5. Additionally, teams won't have to clear a large amount of cap space since he's on a one-year $5.45M contract.

Even though the season's not over, Denver probably won't improve. The team ranks last in the NFL in points allowed (181), and its remaining schedule of opposing offenses ranks seventh in difficulty, per ESPN's Aaron Schatz.

So, expect the franchise to place more players on the trade block to acquire more draft capital and re-stock its roster.
