Report: Cairo Santos to kick for Bears with Eddy Pineiro on IR

The Chicago Bears will reportedly look to their practice squad for a placekicker ahead of Sunday's season opener at the Detroit Lions.

On Tuesday, the Bears officially placed first-choice kicker Eddy Pineiro on injured reserve due to a groin problem that kept him sidelined throughout training camp. Per a new NFL policy used for the 2020 season held amid the coronavirus pandemic, Pineiro could return for Chicago's Week 4 home game against the Indianapolis Colts.

ESPN's Jeff Dickerson wrote that it is expected Cairo Santos will be promoted from the practice squad to the main roster for at least Sunday's contest.

Santos, 28, has mostly been a journeyman since the fall of 2017. He last spent time with the Tennessee Titans in 2019, where he went 0-of-4 on his field-goal attempts in a 14-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 6. Tennesee released him the following day.

In total, Santos converted four of nine field goals and all 12 extra points in his brief stint with the Titans. He's made 80.6% (108-134) of his field goals since he debuted in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2014.

Chicago added Santos to the practice squad on Sunday after he was waived the previous day.
