Report: Commanders made 'strong offer' for Russell Wilson

The Commanders are rumored to be aggressively pursuing a new quarterback, and according to one reported, they're shooting for the stars.

Washington made a "strong offer" for Seattle's Russell Wilson, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. While Rapoport writes the proposal didn't lead anywhere, it goes to show how insistent they are about finding a new signal-caller for next season.

Wilson would seemingly be a potential target, as his name has surfaced in trade rumors for a while now. But the Seahawks are reportedly not interested in moving their future Hall of Famer at this juncture, as coach Pete Carroll said this week, "We have no intention of making any move there."

Instead, the Commanders will turn their attention to other potential trade targets, such as Jimmy Garoppolo of the 49ers or Carson Wentz of the Colts, who have both seen their names mired in trade talks. They'll also have options in free agency, as mid-level quarterbacks like Jameis Winston, Teddy Bridgewater and Mitchell Trubisky will hit the open market next week.

Washington could also look to the draft for help under center, possibly as early as its first pick at No. 11 overall. Liberty's Malik Willis and Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett are believed to be the top two quarterbacks in the class, but other names will be in the mix.

The Commanders' internal options include Taylor Heinicke, their primary starter in 2021, and Garrett Gilbert, who made one start. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Kyle Allen are free agents after appearing for the team last season.
