Report: Cowboys 'seriously in play' for Jets safety Jamal Adams

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin revealed Friday morning that the New York Jets were seeking a first- and third-round draft pick in exchange for safety Jamal Adams.

While that sentiment didn't have much steam for most of the day, a new report from NFL insider Gary Myers suggests the Cowboys are more serious about acquiring the two-time Pro Bowler than many originally believed.

However, a conflicting report from SNY's Ralph Vacchiano states the Jets have "no intention" of trading Adams to the Cowboys — or anyone else for that matter — despite a halt to contract negotiations amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In April, though, Jets general manager Joe Douglas stated he wasn't going to rule out an Adams trade, so at this point anything seems possible.

The Jets would be making a mistake if they traded Adams this season, especially with the AFC East up for grabs the first time since 2008. New York doesn't have much depth beyond Adams, with Anthony Cioffi, Matthias Farley, Bennett Jackson and Marcus Maye, so trading him wouldn't be the best option. Even linebacker C.J. Mosley doesn't want to see the organization trade Adams, calling it a "crazy move."

Adams is entering the fourth year of his five-year rookie deal and will reportedly make $3.5M this season. That jumps to $9.9M million in 2021.

The Cowboys could use a guy like Adams in their secondary, with Ha Ha Clinton-Dix being one of their best safeties at the moment. Adding Adams via trade would help solidify Dallas' defense for the future.

Unfortunately, the Cowboys need to lock up QB Dak Prescott before they can even consider trading for Adams, so expect news on the Prescott front before anything on an Adams trade if you're a Cowboys fan.
