It was reported Thursday that contract negotiations between the New York Jets and Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams have reached a standstill, leaving the 24-year-old "upset" that the organization is dragging their feet on a new deal.
While the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas aren't too keen on trading Adams, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin revealed Friday that New York is asking for a hefty return in exchange for the 2017 sixth overall pick.
Michael Irvin just texted me on the Jamal Adams rumor: "He is great in coverage. Jets want a 1st and a 3rd. He is great for that locker room that needed Michael Bennett to speak up after having just a donut here..." @1053SS @1053thefan pic.twitter.com/y0aYA9hsr5

Irvin is extremely biased towards both Adams and the Cowboys, but what New York is potentially seeking in a trade package may be something Dallas isn't willing to give up.
However, the Cowboys did attempt to land Adams in 2019 when the offered a first-round pick and cornerback Anthony Brown in exchange for the Jets safety, so they may still be interested in making a deal work.
While the Cowboys are intrigued by Adams, they likely won't be making any deals until Dak Prescott signs a new deal, and that may not be for a while. At this point, as the young quarterback is seeking north of $45 million in the final season of his new deal.
Adams has expressed his desire to remain with New York in the past, but it seems that he'll only continue to be frustrated as negotiations aren't going as planned.
New York would be making a mistake by not keeping Adams around for the long haul. In three seasons, Adams has been to two Pro Bowls and earned an All-Pro selection. In 2019, he recorded 6.5 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, 61 solo tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and 13 quarterback hits.
Beyond Adams, the Jets have Anthony Cioffi, Matthias Farley, Bennett Jackson and Marcus Maye, none of who comes close to the talent that Adams has. With the AFC East now winnable for a team besides the New England Patriots for the first time since 2008, Douglas needs to jump on the opportunity to keep Adams in the fold.
