Report: Jimmy Garoppolo officially under contract with Raiders

Las Vegas doesn't need to hold its breath. Jimmy Garoppolo is officially a Raider.

Concerns arose after Garoppolo's introductory news conference was pushed from Thursday to Friday. Per Vincent Bonsignore of The Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders didn't indicate if it was a contract issue or something related to his physical.

Garoppolo has a long injury history. In December, he suffered a broken foot against Miami and missed the rest of the season. In 2020, he missed significant time with a high ankle sprain and in 2021, he missed a game with a calf injury. In 2018, he suffered a torn left ACL in Week 3 and missed the rest of that season.

Regardless, the deal with the 31-year-old QB is complete, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The contract is a three-year, $72.8M deal with $45M guaranteed, per Spotrac.

As a result, Las Vegas doesn't have to scramble for a QB replacement. Although the Raiders might draft a QB with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, rookie QBs typically need time before they start.

Jimmy G, a pocket passer, is a decent choice for the Raiders. His playing style resembles that of former starter Derek Carr.

Garoppolo knows the Raiders' system, having played under Las Vegas HC Josh McDaniels for three seasons while McDaniels served as the Patriots OC.

Garoppolo's career 99.6 passer rating is sixth among active QBs, and his 67.6 completion percentage is second among active QBs.

Questions remain, however. Garoppolo has no Pro Bowl appearances in nine seasons and has thrown for more than 20 passing TDs once. He also has missed 31 games due to injury over the past five seasons.

Nevertheless, having Garoppolo is better than the alternative: not having a viable starter before Week 1.
