The Kansas City Chiefs chose to keep a wide receiver on the team who was on the roster bubble for the entirety of the 2023 season. The Chiefs receiver corps were horrendous during the regular season. They led the league in drops.

The Kansas City Chiefs could move on from a few WRs

Many fans think the Chiefs should move on from Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Kadarius Toney this offseason. The Chiefs could save money by cutting MVS. Toney had issues with drops and penalties on the field and was a distraction off the field.

The Chiefs re-sign Cornell Powell

With the Chiefs’ decisions on those wide receivers looming, the team retained a 2021 draft pick. Per Aaron Wilson with KPRC, the Chiefs signed wide receiver Cornell Powell to the offseason roster. The 2021 fifth-round picks’ contract expired after the Super Bowl.

Powell has appeared in three games for the Chiefs in three years

Powell, a standout at Clemson, has appeared in three games for the Chiefs since the 2021 season. He has no stats. Powell spent the 2023 season on the practice squad.

Powell has not found a way to get on the field for the Chiefs, even with a wide receiver roster that was not spectacular in the 2023 season. But he’s shown enough promise on the practice squad to sign a new contract for 2024.
