Report: Washington QB Ryan Fitzpatrick out 6-8 weeks with hip subluxation

Earlier on Monday, it was reported that Washington Football Team starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick would miss multiple games and go on injured reserve because of the right hip subluxation he suffered in Sunday's season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The latest update on Fitzpatrick's health isn't encouraging.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter (h/t John Keim), Washington expects to be without Fitzpatrick for six to eight weeks. That leaves Taylor Heinicke, who replaced the injured Fitzpatrick Sunday, as the club's new QB1. Kyle Allen moves up to the role of primary backup, while Washington added Kyle Shurmur to its practice squad.

Understandably, some have linked Washington head coach Ron Rivera with free agent Cam Newton, as Rivera coached the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player when both were with the Carolina Panthers. Rivera seemed to pour cold water over acquiring Newton back on Aug. 31, and he said Monday: "We like the guys we have; they've done good things for us. We'll see what happens. I'm as confident as I could be."

Heinicke completed 11-of-15 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers and will start Thursday's prime-time matchup against the New York Giants.
