It was learned earlier on Monday that Washington Football Team starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick could miss multiple weeks of action because of the hip subluxation he suffered in Sunday's season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Washington is placing Fitzpatrick on injured reserve after an MRI confirmed the nature of his injury. Per league rules, he will miss a minimum of three games, but Rapoport added the club doesn't yet consider his setback season-ending.
Taylor Heinicke will get the start for Washington for Thursday's divisional showdown with the New York Giants.
A serious and scary injury for Ryan Fitzpatrick. It is Taylor Heinicke going forward for the next several weeks at the very least, with Kyle Allen as the backup. https://t.co/1pVbTIKaA2

Heinicke replaced the injured Fitzpatrick in Sunday's outing and completed 11-of-15 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Allen will serve as Heinicke's backup for at least the next three contests, but Washington could look at the free-agency market for a signal-caller depending on what occurs over the next couple of games and Fitzpatrick's status through the fall.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera seemed disinterested in signing former Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots starter Cam Newton on the final day of August, but it's unknown if Sunday's developments changed his mind about the former NFL MVP whom he coached in Carolina.
