Robert Griffin III hints at rift between Bills stars
Based on his actions throughout the offseason, it appears Pro Bowl receiver Stefon Diggs may want out of Buffalo.
While many have speculated as to what exactly Diggs’ issue with the Bills seems to be, former Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens quarterback-turned-NFL analyst Robert Griffin III, who has the same agent as Diggs, recently shared on the “Rich Eisen Show” what he believes the problem to be.
"[Diggs] and Josh Allen seemed to have a bromance rolling it felt like for years there, until there was a problem with their game against the Bengals in the playoffs," Griffin III said. "So, I think it's clear this is a personal thing between Josh and Diggs. And they have to get their partnership back on the field…I think Josh Allen's running into that right now. Everything is fine until it's not fine in a relationship when it comes to a quarterback and a wide receiver like Diggs. So Josh has to manage that relationship the right way, and I think he's the only one that can rectify it.”
Griffin III thinks the hostility stemmed from Buffalo’s 27-10 playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in January. Although Diggs led the Bills with 10 targets, he had just four receptions for 35 yards and was targeted just one time — a pass that was batted at the line of scrimmage — on the team’s second-to-last drive that ended with a turnover-on-downs midway through the fourth quarter.
Diggs sought Allen out on the sideline after the drive to express his frustrations. Allen subsequently ignored the 29-year-old receiver.
"I think this really just came to a head in that playoff game because in that moment, if it was handled differently, when Diggs had his emotional outburst on the sidelines, if that was handled differently by Josh Allen and the team, I think we wouldn't be talking about this today," Griffin III said.
Diggs came under fire after the playoff loss for trying to leave the facility before the coaches made it back to the locker room. Running back Duke Johnson stopped him and brought him back to where the rest of the team was, but Diggs bolted a few moments later.
Several reports have indicated Diggs, who's averaged 161 targets per season over the last three years, is not happy with how he’s used in the offense and that he has no say in the offensive play calls. The All-Pro wideout is under contract for five more seasons after signing a four-year, $90 million extension last offseason.
