Robert Griffin III: 'NFL MVP shouldn't just be a QB award'
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III thinks the league should look past his old position for its 2022 MVP.
Griffin took to Twitter on Wednesday to advocate for players like Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson and 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa to be in consideration for the top honor.
Since 2000, only four running backs have been recognized as the NFL MVP: Marshall Faulk (Rams), Shaun Alexander (Seahawks), LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers), and Adrian Peterson (Vikings).
No other position besides quarterback has really registered in the new century.
A defensive player hasn't won the award since 1986 with Giants legend Lawrence Taylor taking home the honor.
To Griffin's point, Jefferson has established himself as the league's best wide receiver this season. He has 1,756 receiving yards and eight touchdowns under his belt, alongside maybe the best catch in NFL history.
As for Bosa, the Niners rusher has a league-best 17.5 sacks and 48 tackles. He's become the premiere front seven player in the NFL.
Star quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen dominate the conversation. In all likelihood, one of them will take home the award this winter.
However, to Griffin and many others, the non-quarterbacks should get a much more fair shake than they've gotten in the past. Jefferson and Bosa are great examples of why.
