Saints' Taysom Hill signs unique four-year extension

The New Orleans Saints restructured the contract for Swiss Army knife Taysom Hill back in March. Now they seemingly are taking steps to keep the 31-year-old locked down for the foreseeable future.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that Hill put pen to paper on a unique four-year contract extension that includes $22.5 million guaranteed and could be worth in the ballpark of between $40 million and $95 million. How much Hill ultimately earns will depend on where he spends the majority of his time as an offensive weapon for the Saints.

According to Schefter, Hill's base salary is set at $40 million, but the veteran can earn an additional $55 million if he becomes New Orleans' starting quarterback while on his contract. Hill competed with Jameis Winston for the starting gig over the summer but ultimately lost the job to Winston, who went down to a season-ending torn ACL and damage to his MCL during a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Halloween.

Hill, meanwhile, missed time this fall with a concussion and, more recently, a foot injury. Thus far this season, he's rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, caught four passes for 52 yards, and completed seven of eight passes for 56 yards and an interception.

The Saints, meanwhile, have lost three straight to fall to 5-5 overall with backup signal-caller Trevor Siemian leading the offense. They host the 6-4 Buffalo Bills on Thanksgiving night.
