San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has a difficult task ahead of him in the coming years as he looks to maintain their position as one of the best teams in the NFL without having the advantage of a starting quarterback on a team-friendly deal.

And Josh Williams will play a key role in helping Lynch in that challenge.

The 49ers, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, are promoting Williams from his role of national scout to the position of director of scouting and football operations.

Williams will work closely with Lynch and the 49ers' executive vice-president of football operations Paraag Marathe.

His promotion is not the only change to the scouting department for the 49ers.

Per Neil Stratton of Inside The League, 49ers scouting assistant Jack Quagliarello left the franchise to take up a role working as a pro scout for the Washington Commanders, whose front office is now led by Adam Peters, the former assistant general manager for San Francisco.

Quagliarello has, according to the 49ers' team website, been replaced by Ryan Schutta.

Schutta takes on the position of scouting assistant having most recently served as a special teams analyst for Wake Forest.
