All 32 teams are making their final cuts to trim their rosters down to 53. As for the Chicago Bears, some notable names such as Nathan Peterman, Sam Kamara , and others have been cut. However, one cut in particular is very eye-raising. That cut is offensive guard Michael Schofield.
Schofield was brought in before training camp started to compete for the starting right guard position. With Cody Whitehair comfortably starting at left guard, Lucas Patrick set to play center, and the tackle spots sorting themselves out, it was clear where Schofield’s place would be. However, prior to the second preseason game for Chicago, second-year tackle Teven Jenkins was moved inside to play the guard spot. With Schofield cut from the roster, this move confirms two things: Jenkins is the starting guard and he is not going to be traded.
Trade Rumors
Since the beginning of training camp, rumors have swirled regarding Teven Jenkins and a potential trade. Whether it was character issues, a schematic misfit, or other reasons, it appeared the Bears were ready to move him. However, moving Jenkins made little sense unless the team received a high draft pick in return. The line is already considered a weak point on the roster, why make it worse?
As recently as this week, the rumors were still swirling regarding Jenkins. However, for the time being, it’s safe to believe the team likes him at the guard spot and will give him this season to prove he can play there. Who knows? The move could pay dividends for the Bears and Jenkins moving forward.
Starting Guard
As of today, it appears the right guard job is Jenkins’ to lose. Naturally, a massive cut by another team in the league could change that, but chances are he’ll start on the right side with fellow 2021 draft pick Larry Borom. Overall, Jenkins looked solid in the preseason at the guard spot. With his physicality, he’ll be able to become a menace inside on the line.
As a guard, Jenkins looks natural on the above play. He’s able to climb to the second level and use that nasty physicality he possesses to make an impactful block. More of this from Jenkins and he may have found his permanent home at the guard spot.
What’s On Tap Next for the Bears?
As cuts continue to occur, the Bears’ 53-man roster is coming into focus. Surprising cuts by other clubs could change the roster a bit, but the overall outlook of the 2022-23 Bears seems to be coming into focus on Tuesday.
