Well, this is going to be pretty awkward. Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles are slated to take on the Seattle Seahawks on national television this coming Monday night.

It’s a game the 3-6-1 Eagles need in order to remain in first place in the armpit that is the NFC East. Unfortunately for Wentz, there’s now growing calls for embattled head coach Doug Pederson to bench him for rookie second-round pick Jalen Hurts. That includes Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver D.K. Metcalf.

This isn’t necessarily coming out of left field. Wentz heads into Week 12 leading the league with 14 interceptions. He’s a bottom-five starting quarterback in the NFL right now, as evidenced by the high-priced signal-caller’s performance against the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday.

It’s getting really ugly in Philadelphia right now. Pederson is on the hot seat. He appears willing to ride Wentz to the unemployment line. Meanwhile, the Eagles are committed to Wentz to the tune of an absurd four-year, $128 million contract.

Will the Eagles bench Wentz?

Not likely. As noted above, they have a huge financial commitment when it comes to Wentz’s contract. That will make it difficult for Pederson to justify benching Wentz to the team’s front office, general manager Howie Roseman included.

Despite this, Philadelphia made the decision to select Hurts in the second round of April’s draft because. Now among the most mistake-prone quarterbacks in the NFL, there’s growing calls for the former No. 2 overall pick to be benched.

It makes sense from a team-wide perspective. If these Eagles were to lose to Seattle in Week 12, the winner of the Cowboys-Washington game on Thanksgiving would be in first place.
