Steelers DT Daniel Archibong on reserve/retired list

It appears that the Pittsburgh Steelers unexpectedly have an open roster spot ahead of the start of training camp and on the same day they confirmed that what was previously Heinz Field is now known as Acrisure Stadium.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, the NFL's transaction report for Monday shows that the Steelers placed defensive tackle Daniel Archibong on the reserve/retired list.

Archibong entered the NFL when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears in 2021. Per NBC Sports Chicago, the 24-year-old failed to make the Bears' final roster last summer, and he ultimately signed to Pittsburgh's practice squad. In total, the Steelers elevated Archibong to the active roster for only a pair of games. He notched two tackles and played 13 defensive snaps during what will go down as his final season with the organization.

It's currently unclear why Archibong landed on the reserve/retired list so close to players returning for training camp later this month. According to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, Archibong re-signed with the Steelers following the 2021 campaign and was a full participant in the club's offseason training program, organized team activities, and mandatory minicamp ahead of Monday's development.
