Brian Flores has landed in Pittsburgh. Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

Former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores has a new NFL staff role despite his ongoing lawsuit against the league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Saturday that they have hired Flores as a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Flores’ resume “speaks for itself” and that Flores’ history in developing defensive players was a key factor in the hire.

The fact that Flores will have a job within the NFL is something of a surprise considering where things stand right now between him and the league. The former Dolphins coach is currently suing the league and four teams alleging racial discrimination in hiring practices. The Steelers are not one of the teams involved in Flores' lawsuit and notably are a team with a minority head coach.

As an added measure of intrigue, the Steelers do have the Miami Dolphins as an opponent in 2022, with the game in Miami. That will provide some interesting storylines, especially considering the Dolphins are going to be dealing with some of Flores’ allegations for some time.
