Steelers re-sign backup QB Josh Dobbs to one-year deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers began the new NFL year last month facing salary-cap challenges but aren't short on quarterbacks in the middle of April.

Per the Around the NFL staff, backup signal-caller Josh Dobbs agreed to remain with the Steelers on a new one-year deal. Dobbs entered the NFL when the Steelers used a fourth-round draft selection to acquire his services in 2017 but was then traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fifth-round pick in September 2019. Pittsburgh claimed him last September after he was waived by Jacksonville, and he completed four of five passes for two yards in his only appearance of the regular season. He also rushed for 20 yards in the loss to the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 3.

Interestingly, Pittsburgh signed former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins in January, presumably to sit behind future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger and backup Mason Rudolph on the depth chart. Wednesday's development suggests Pittsburgh isn't yet sold on Haskins earning a roster spot during summer training camp sessions and the preseason, and the fact that Haskins' contract reportedly carries "zero guarantees" gives the Steelers the option to move on from him whenever they see fit.
