The Pittsburgh Steelers officially agreed to terms with offensive lineman Mason McCormick on a rookie contract, according to the team.

The Steelers drafted McCormick with the team’s fourth-round pick (No. 119) out of the FCS school, South Dakota State. In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Steelers selected quarterback Chris Oladokun in the seventh-round which was the first time in team history that they drafted a player from South Dakota State. McCormick is now the second to be drafted by the team.

While the exact details of McCormick’s contract are not available as of yet, Over The Cap estimated that the four-year deal would be worth around $4.78 million with a signing bonus of $764,900. Over The Cap projected McCormick’s cap hit to be $986,225 in 2024.

While at San Diego State, McCormick started 57 consecutive games for the Jackrabbits and was a consensus All-America selection during his final two seasons at the school. In those last two seasons, McCormick and the Jackrabbits won 29 straight games and claimed back-to-back Football Championship Subdivision national titles.

McCormick’s in-game play over his final two collegiate seasons earned him an invite the the East-West Shrine Bowl, a collegiate All-Star game for NFL hopefuls. Additionally, it secured McCormick with a pre-draft visit with the Steelers.

In 2024, McCormick will likely be Isaac Seumalo’s backup left guard. Nate Herbig and Spencer Anderson are the other backup guards on the roster, but with McCormick’s pedigree, he will likely be ahead of Anderson on the pecking order.

McCormick played left guard his entire college career so unless he switches to the right side, Seumalo would be the guy flipping which is feasible as he started 19 career games at the spot during his career.

After the 2024 season, Daniels and Herbig will become free agents meaning that if the Steelers see a good chunk of progress by McCormick, he can be in line to take over at a starting guard spot in 2025.
