Steelers sign punter who hasn't played in six years

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing punter Brad Wing to their practice squad, six years since the LSU product last played in the NFL.

Due to the Steelers' well-chronicled offensive struggles this season, the team's punter -- Pressley Harvin III -- has been busy through the first three games. The 2021 seventh-round draft pick leads the league in both punts (19) and total punt yardage (897) but is battling a hamstring injury.

If Harvin III is unable to suit up for Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the Houston Texans, Wing could appear in his first NFL contest since December 31, 2017. Then a 26-year-old with the New York Giants, the lefty recorded nine punts for 363 yards, one touchback and one tackle during the team's 18-10 win over Washington in Week 17.

Following two collegiate seasons with the Tigers, Wing signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 but only played on their practice squad. Wing made his NFL debut with Pittsburgh in 2014 and played in all 16 games that season, before being traded to the Giants in September 2015.

He suited up for the G-Men for three years and led the league in punts (95) during his most recent season.

Wing is now 32 years old and while it's been more than half a decade since he was a part of a real game, he had tryouts in 2018, 2019 and 2020 according to his Pro Football Reference page.

Since his last NFL game, the Australian played in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2019 and more recently competed with the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL. Wing led the XFL in punting average (47.8) this past season.
