Super Bowl LVIII: Fantasy football style

The 49ers and Chiefs are about to face off in Super Bowl LVIII, four years after meeting in Super Bowl LIV. How would it look if each team was allowed to build a fantasy football-style roster using players from both games?

Kansas City Chiefs

QB Patrick Mahomes | The Chiefs have no choice but you won’t hear them complaining. The reigning Super Bowl MVP is 2-1 in the big game with 738 yards and five touchdowns.

RB Damien Williams | The former Sooner played for five teams (two with the Chiefs) in an unremarkable nine-year career but averaged 6.1 yards per carry for 104 yards and a touchdown in Super Bowl LIV.

WR Tyreek Hill | Hill had 105 yards in his first Super Bowl and 73 yards against the Buccaneers in his second. After flirting with a 2,000 yard season in 2023, he finished as the NFL’s leading receiver with 1,799 yards.

WR Rashee Rice | The rookie didn’t have a 100-yard game until Week 12 (107), but played much better towards the end of the year. He finished the regular season with 127 yards against the Bengals and had 130 yards with a score in his first playoff game against the Dolphins.

TE Travis Kelce | Was there ever a doubt? The man has more playoff receptions (156) than Jerry Rice (151).

FLEX Isiah Pacheco | Pacheco averaged 5.1 yards per carry for 76 yards and a touchdown as a rookie in Super Bowl LVII. This year, he leads all playoff running backs with 254 yards rushing.

DST 2023 Chiefs | Steve Spagnuolo’s unit gave up the second-fewest yards (289.8) and points per game (17.3) in 2023.

K Harrison Butker | Once again, the team has no choice but with 900 points as a Chief, Butker is already the third-leading scorer in franchise history.

San Francisco 49ers

QB Brock Purdy | Jimmy Garoppolo is better than people remember but after throwing for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2023, it’s easy to forget Purdy was drafted last in 2022.

RB Christian McCaffrey | The former Carolina Panther averaged 5.4 yards per carry for a league-leading 1,459 yards in the regular season, 292 yards more than second-place rusher Derrick Henry.

WR Deebo Samuel | Samuel had just 39 yards receiving against the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, but added 53 yards on the ground. In five years as a Niner, he has just as many rushing scores as receiving touchdowns (19) as well as one passing score.

WR Brandon Aiyuk | The former Sun Devil wasn’t on San Francisco's last Super Bowl team, but he’s led the 49ers in receiving for the past two years. He ended the regular season as the league’s seventh-leading receiver with 1,342 yards.

TE George Kittle | Kittle finished 2023 as the team’s second-leading receiver with the third 1,000-yard season of his career (1,020).

FLEX Raheem Mostert | McCaffrey may have led the NFL in rushing but no running back scored more touchdowns than Mostert in 2023 (18). The 31-year-old running back spent nine seasons in San Francisco before joining the Dolphins in 2022 and led the 49ers in rushing with 58 yards in Super Bowl LIV.

DST 2023 49ers | San Francisco gave up the second-fewest yards in 2019, but only had a +4 turnover ratio, placing in a tie for tenth in the league. This year's team allowed 303.9 yards per game, eighth-fewest in the NFL, but had a +10 turnover ratio, good for a tie for fifth.

K Robbie Gould | Jake Moody had a respectable rookie season, making 21 of 25 kicks and all but one extra point, but Gould’s 1,961 points are 10th-most in NFL history.
