Super Bowl 'script' tweet impacting betting market
Suffice to say, the NFL "script" shenanigans have made their way to Super Bowl week, and one particular "script" tweet is having a huge impact on what fans are wagering on before Sunday's game.
Action Network's Darren Rovell reported that a tweet over the weekend that claimed to have leaked the final score of Sunday's game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles has caused bets on the "leaked" 37-34 final score to skyrocket.
"DraftKings spokesman Stephen Miraglia told the Action Network that 37-34 Eagles is the most popular correct score bet so far, making up 21% of the total bets of the correct score market and 26% of the money," Rovell reported.
Rovell also confirmed that the 37-34 final is the most popular prop at BetMGM, where the odds are currently at +8000.
The Twitter account that posted the alleged score was suspended, but not before it received over 12 million views and left a lasting impact on sportsbooks this week.
The concept of NFL seasons being scripted gained instant traction after former NFLer Arian Foster said on Barstool's "Macrodosing" podcast that players are handed scripts ahead of each season that break down everything from what the scores of games will be to whether a referee will blow a call. While Foster's sarcasm could be detected when speaking on the topic, the reaction from both the NFL community and fans alike has taken on a life of its own.
For those considering betting on that final score: Only one team has ever scored 37 points in a Super Bowl, when Washington defeated Buffalo 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI in 1991. That isn't to say that the Eagles couldn't score 37, but surely Andy Reid will have something to say about his defense giving up that many points on football's biggest stage.
