The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are adding quality veteran depth, signing underrated cornerback Tavierre Thomas, according to multiple reports Monday.

Thomas, 28, spent the past three seasons with the Houston Texans and appeared in nine games during the 2023 campaign while finishing with 51 total tackles with two forced fumbles.

What Tavierre Thomas Brings Tampa Bay Buccaneers

As Pro Football Focus points out, Thomas held opposing wide receivers to 10.3 yards per reception, when they went against him, while garnering a 69.5 coverage grade from the outlet. Thomas really excels playing out of the slot, and with physicality up near the line of scrimmage, particularly against the run, as shown by his elite 83.2 run-defense grade from PFF.

In a lot of ways, Thomas is a bit of an ascending talent, who now lands in the Buccaneers’ secondary.

Through his first six seasons, Thomas has posted 225 total tackles while intercepting two passes and 6.5 tackles for loss.

“Thomas is a great special teams player, one of the best gunners and return game blockers in the NFL,” LionsWire reporter Jeff Rison writes. “As a cornerback he’s kind of stiff and looks anxious, but he’s made a name for himself as an undrafted rookie by being very good on special teams and a good locker room presence.”

Prior to signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tavierre Thomas previously visited the Detroit Lions earlier in NFL free agency. Ultimately, the Buccaneers got Thomas in the building and didn’t let him leave without a contract.
