The Houston Texans were never going to be a good team in 2021.
Not as long as Deshaun Watson remained inactive and off the field.
The team did get a win to start the season, only to lose eight straight before picking up a surprise win this past Sunday against Tennessee.
Getting Tyrod Taylor back was a nice boost, but there is still not enough talent to succeed.
One weird position group on this team is at running back.
It is veterans galore for the Texans and the season began with Mark Ingram, David Johnson, Rex Burkhead, and Phillip Lindsay all in the backfield.
The crowd got a bit smaller once Ingram was traded to the New Orleans Saints, however, there are just not enough carries to go around.
That has led to a surprising roster move so late in the year.
Lindsay is now out and free to pursue a new opportunity, given he clears waivers.
A Potential Positive
This move might be what it takes for Lindsay to regain his past Pro Bowl form.
He began his NFL career with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with the Denver Broncos and made a Pro Bowl in the process.
His stock fell in 2020 following an injury and he was lucky to find a one-year deal with the Texans.
Now, if he clears waivers, he can land on a contending team and prove he still has plenty of value at 27 years old.
He was not getting enough touches in Houston in a situation where it really makes no sense to have so many veteran running backs around.
The goal should be developing young players as it’s clear Watson is not coming back.
The Texans are a mess and Lindsay is now free of that organization.
Contending teams may already be lining up to bring him in on a minimum deal for the remainder of the season.
