There is no kicking competition in Green Bay
The Green Bay Packers claimed rookie kicker Gabe Brkic off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings in mid-June. However, that does not mean that there is any sort of competition in Green Bay at placekicker. Although franchise legend Mason Crosby had a down year in 2021, and despite the team bringing in veteran special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia, this is still Crosby's job.
The reason NFL teams add lesser-known players from waivers during the offseason is because they want competition and depth. Crosby is the all-time leading scorer in Packers history (1,806 points). He has been kicking at Lambeau Field for 15 seasons already since he was drafted out of Colorado in 2007. The Texas native is one of the most beloved Packers players in the team's history and an unbelievable teammate. Just ask QB Aaron Rodgers, who has played with the kicker during Crosby's entire career.
After missing nine field goals last season (tied for career-worst), some of which were not his fault due to the inconsistency of former punter and holder Corey Bojorquez, it's clear that Crosby might be approaching the 18th hole of his career. Nobody knows if that could be this season or maybe next season.
The Packers brought in Brkic because they want him to give Crosby a little push to help improve at the end of his storied career. Competition makes everyone better.
Of course, if the 37 year-old unexpectedly completely messes up during the preseason, a different conversation could be held after training camp.
For now, there is absolutely no kicking competition in Green Bay unless Crosby makes it one with poor play. With addition of veteran punter Pat O'Donnell, the entire field goal operation should definitely improve. It's Crosby's show until further notice.
