Dallas Cowboys star guard, Tyler Smith, left the game with Detroit early. It was reported the next day that Smith tore his plantar fasciitis. Upon first glance, it would be assumed that Smith would miss a long period of time. Thankfully, that is not the case as he has a chance to suit up in the must-win game against Washington.

Now to put on my “doctor hat” and delve into this injury. Plantar fasciitis involves inflammation of a thick band of tissue. It runs across the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toe.  I know that is a mouthful, but it really isn’t “as bad” as it sounds. A full tear is also the best case scenario as opposed to a partial tear.

What’s the Chance Smith Suits Up for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday?

Not only did Smith tear this tissue, he completely tore it. So, how can he be ready to suit up so soon? NFL players and professional athletes in general have an expedited recovery time. The recovery time for this injury can be months but with proper training, supplements, and rehabilitation, it could be sooner.

Still, it does feel unlikely that Smith will play this week for the Cowboys. The one thing this does is keep the opposing team on their heels. If Smith cannot log full practices this week, he will likely rest so that he is ready for the following week in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Potential for a Dallas Cowboys’ Rookie to Emerge

In the case that Smith can’t play, Rookie Guard/Tackle T.J. Bass will fill that role. Bass has been used this season to be plugged in when a starter gets hurt during the game or is unable to start. Bass played Saturday for Smith after he came out of the game.

In this case, the Cowboys passing game will take more of a hit as Smith is an above average pass blocker in his second season. This opportunity could also give Bass the chance to prove himself and possibly earn a bigger role on the team heading into the 2024 season.
