Former NFL tight end Frank Wycheck has died.
Wycheck’s family announced in a statement that Wycheck appears to have fallen inside his home in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Saturday. He hit his head and was found unresponsive.
Drafted in the sixth round out of Maryland back in 1993, Wycheck spent the first two seasons of his career with Washington. Wycheck was then signed by the Houston Oilers, who later become the Tennessee Titans.
Wycheck became a fan favorite with the Titans and made three consecutive Pro Bowl teams from 1998-2000. He touched the ball on the famous “Music City Miracle” play in the 2000 NFL playoffs. The Titans were trailing 16-15 with seconds remaining in their Wild Card game against the Buffalo Bills when Wycheck took a handoff from fullback Lorenzo Neal and threw the ball across the field to Kevin Dyson. The wide receiver ran 75 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
Wycheck played for the Titans from 1995-2003. He is part of the team’s Ring of Honor.
After he retired, Wycheck worked in radio and became the color commentator for Titans games in 2005. He stepped down prior to the 2017 season, citing health issues from injuries he sustained during his NFL career.
Wycheck had 505 receptions, 5,126 yards and 28 touchdowns during his NFL career.
