The National Football League has fined the Washington Football Team $10 million as a result of an investigation into the team’s culture. The money will be donated to a charity. You can read the findings of the investigation here.
Officially, owner Dan Snyder is not suspended and the team will not loss any draft picks. However, recently-promoted co-CEO Tanya Snyder will assume the day-to-day operations while Dan Snyder will turn his focus on a new stadium and “other matters.”
An investigation headed by Beth Wilkinson was launched in July 2020 following allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct against the team by more than a dozen current and former female employees. The league oversaw the investigation by request of the team shortly afterwards.
Washington released a statement following the announcement of the fine.
Tanya Snyder, the wife of Dan Snyder, was appointed as co-CEO of the franchise on Monday. Immediately, there was speculation her appointment was to provide ownership continuity in the event Dan Snyder was suspended by the league.
Again, Dan Snyder is not officially suspended. However, Tanya Snyder will be in charge of the day-to-day operations for “least the next several months.”
It could essentially be so Dan is indeed focused on the team’s new stadium, as their lease at FedEx Field expires in 2026. But he can do that while running the team, right?
Here’s what Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said about Dan stepping aside for the next few months:
She’ll have it “for at least the next several months,” which basically means Daniel Snyder has been suspended indefinitely, and that his ability to return to his usual role, the one he’s held for more than 20 years, will be determined at a later date.
Nonetheless suspension or not, we’ll see a lot more of their new co-CEO and co-owner Tanya Snyder and less of Dan Snyder for an undetermined time.
